Correction

Well it seems like www.ajaxwindows.com is down but if you go to http://eyeos.info it is up and a very useful and (free)cheap alternative to some apps. Enjoy!

Ummm, get off my cloud...

Well it has been weeks since I have blogged. I last spoke about FTTH but today I am going to talk about something else. As the title suggests I am going to discuss a little about cloud computing. Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet. Cloud computing services provide business applications online that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored on servers.

Google is a good example for how we use cloud computing everyday with their online documents and spreadsheets. Microsoft is working on a cloud OS called Azure however if anyone is interested go to this website www.ajaxwindows.com and it is free. Cloud computing promises to cut costs. But keep in mind this I just provided a link to a free web OS that operates just like you'd expect of windows and office with tons of storage. So it is true that costs have been cut... until next time.

Fiber is good for us. Really

You know... this is just an exciting time for us. Everything is going to be fiber. If you have been keeping up with this information you know the approximate time for all homes in the U.S. to have fiber run to them is 2020. Why fiber? I mentioned earlier more bandwidth essentially to send and receive information. But it does not end there. FTTH will allow a true networked home eventually, where all devices such as TV's, PC's, phones, gaming machines, camcorders and even appliances with IP addresses will have seamless interaction. We want to share information between all of these devices in our homes as well as with family and friends in different locations via Internet.

FTTH certainly provides the bandwidth for such a thing to occur it just is not seamless yet. To get a true connected home we need a solution to manage all of the devices on the home network beyond TR-069. TR-069 CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP) is a protocol that was created by the Broadband Forum (formally the DSL Forum) which sets out a common method for CPE (Customer Premise Equipoment) devices to communicate with an Auto Configuration Server (ACS). An ACS can manage a device, trouble shoot, configure, remotely upgrade etc.

TR-069 was created by the Broadband Forum (formally the DSL Forum) to standardize the Wide Area Network (WAN) management of CWMP. Service Providers can now use one common platform to manage, through the Internet, all of their Customer Premise Devices, no matter the device nor the manufacturer. And here I thought the Jetsons cartoon was just far out when I was younger. Now we have the ability to do those things. Those guys 40 years ago were visionaries Imagine that!! Well that is it for now until next time.

Have you had your Fiber today?

A few days ago I posted some information about FTTH, today I will shed some more light on FTTH. First and foremost good day to all. You see, this thing, this... powerful thing we know as technology is like a juggernaut it has gained momentum and it just can be stopped. It has branched off into many industries but I am just focusing on Information Technology and Telecommunications. Well maybe more stuff if it changes our lives dramatically. Okay, some of you who take the time to read this may be familiar already with FTTH in the form of ATT Uverse. It is almost FTTH because it is a hybrid fiber coax mix and that is just not fair so let me tell you why they do it that way. They are just plain cheap. Verizon is building fiber all the way to the house and spending 20 billion bucks.

ATT uses a Mini-DSLAM (mini-DSL access multiplexers) With one of these puppies placed at the network periphery instead of in the CO (central office) it can provide the technological bridge to FTTH, allowing telcos to use existing infrastructures to deliver video effectively.... cheaters. Check this out. The requirements of DSLAMs that carry voice, high-speed data and video are massive. To deliver bundled services, phone, internet and TV; the DSLAM must supply each subscriber with a minimal 4 Mbps of bandwidth or 6 Mbps for VOD (video-on-demand).

No wonder the US is pretty much last in FTTH deployments with 1-1.4% penetration.
21.2% are wired in Hong Kong, 19.6% in South Korea, 16.3% in Japan and guess whos next... no really take a guess. Scandanavia chimes in at 7.2%. The good news though is that ATT is giving the effort but the lie they are selling is not cool its not true fiber more like oat bran.  Well thats it for now. My next blog will come soon and I will touch on FTTH a little bit more.

FTTH what in the world?

Welcome to my first blog. Ok I know some folks will think FTTH is some strange acronym and it is if you have never heard of it. It means Fiber to the Home. Why is it significant you ask... well lets get into that. As we inch further into the Information Age more is the key word. We want more content, more speed, more apps, more freedom, more creativity, more bandwidth.... bingo more bandwidth, more bandwidth. I work in telecommunications, specifically cable and I went to school for computer networking (I love technology if you couldn't tell) so I am sharing with the world my love for technology and want people to know what is going on right under our noses.

FTTH will solve all of our want issues because the medium promises speeds of up to 100M bit/sec and can bring high-speed service to homes at a greater distance from a central switch than DSL. DSL is limited to a few thousand feet FTTH has a range from 6 to 50 miles if I am not mistaken. So whats the hold up? It starts with an M ends with a Y. The switch is happening though less than 10 million homes have FTTH but the goal for FTTH at every home is set for completion around 2020. (Japan and South Korea have the infrastructure now with South Korea at 49Mbps. They have one-sixth of our population. Madrid Spain is scheduled for 2016) Our median speed is 2.3Mbps which I believe is the lowest in competive markets. Well there you have it this is just the tip of the iceberg on FTTH. I will blog more on this when I get more info. I will also bring up other technologies . Hope you enjoyed
